WHAT ARE EMBOSSING AND DEBOSSING?

The personalization of promotional materials and objects is at the heart of successful branding. How do you want to personalize your promotional items, by embossing or debossing? The terms sound similar, but their meaning is very different, even opposite.

We regularly have discussions on embossingvs. debossing within the consultancy we offer in our clients’ projects. It is understandable, it is not a common topic, except for fans of printing methods.

What is the difference between the two easily confused methods? Debossing produces an image that is pressed into the material and indented, while embossing produces an image raised and slightly larger than the surface of the material.

EMBOSSING PROCESS

Embossing is the art of producing patterns on the surface of promotional products made of metal, leather, cardboard, paper and silicon.

There are 2 methods to create an embossed effect:

– The promotional product is pressed between a pair of molds specially adapted to the hardness and depth of the required design.

– The design is created as part of a mold. The material, i.e. silicon, is poured into the mold, creating the product with the embossed design. This method also allows for a color fill in the mold, resulting in a highly colored design.

ADVANTAGES:
  • Branding becomes part of the product and is permanent.
  • Create a 3D logo effect
  • Can be completed with stamping with foil or with color filling on silicone items

DEBOSSING PROCESS

Debossing (or hot stamping) is produced by pressing a hot engraved metal plate on the surface of a product with high pressure. The result is a permanent image pressed on the surface of the product, offering a high perceived value to promotional gifts.

A metal plate most commonly called a “block” is produced using a die cutting process to create the logo or design raised on the surface. The block and the product are placed in a press, because punching requires a lot of pressure and heat.

In the workshop, it is determined how deeply the design will be printed in the product. This is mainly determined by the material that is deboned. The result is a personalized imprint that looks elegant and subtle and will not fade over time.

EMBOSSING AND DEBOSSING IN THE PROMOTIONAL PRODUCTS INDUSTRY

Embossing and debossing processes are most frequently used to make promotional products such as:

  • Diaries and other leather objects or accessories
  • Customized silicone bracelets with embossed designs that have been popular over the years; they may also include a color fill to highlight the logo.
  • Carton and cork

CONVERT YOUR DESIRED DESIGN INTO A VECTOR FORMAT

The reason why vector files are better is that there are mathematical calculations that make it possible to resize the project without losing quality. This method makes the printing process easier, regardless of the type of packaging or product you want to create.

It is also important to use a simple design. The more complex the logo, the more likely it is to look distorted when it is made in a 3D format. Also, logos that have shadows, gradients and similar effects can look unusual when they are suddenly transformed into a three-dimensional texture, so in this case, a simpler model is safer.
